Danny Collins has been in the music business a long time.  He's getting tired of playing to audiences full of senior citizens, who all sing along to pop hits he can't stand.  Collins longs to play more artistically adventurous material like from his first record, but his record label insists that he perform hit material that was written FOR him, not BY him. Danny's manager shows up one day with a letter addressed to Danny, written by John Lennon forty five years ago.  And that's where the plot thickens... 'Danny Collins' is a treat, and no one is more surprised than Andrew and Phil.  This light drama does build substance as it goes, and is a pretty good role for Al Pacino.  The film was written by Dan Fogleman, screenwriter of "Crazy, Stupid, Love", so he knows how avoid cliche' and still deliver the emotional pay off.
