Boxer Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) loses his wife, his inspiration in a fatal accident, shortly after winning a major fight. He finds himself alone with his daughter, funds rapidly depleting. She is eventually taken away from him by social services. He's hit rock bottom. It's a long way back up to the top, but with the help of Tick Wills (Forest Whitaker) he gets a job at the gym and starts training again. Andrew and Phil give 'Southpaw' their endorsement, despite that the boxing film is a tried true genre that holds little surprises.
