An average man called upon to do something extraordinary is a hallmark of a good hero's tale, and no one knows that better than Steven Spielberg. This sophisticated thriller features impeccable period detail and an evocative depiction of governments that were considered our enemies at the time. Tom Hanks could be the new James Stewart, in terms of representing the-good-American-who-does-what's-right. Hanks is a national treasure and he performs admirably in this role. But when are we going to see Hanks' "Vertigo"? Does he get offers to play dark, unwholesome characters?
