Greta Gerwig stars as Maggie, a young woman in New York who wants to have a baby, but not deal with having a man in her life. She seems to have found the perfect sperm donor in Guy, a pickler bottler (phallic reference, anyone?) who is copacetic to have no involvement in Maggie's life. But she has been spending time with John (Ethan Hawke) a frustrated novelist in an unhappy marriage, and love begins to grow. Rebecca Miller's New York relationship comedy is unfortunately overshadowed by the work of the king of New York relationship comedies and suffers in comparison. 'Maggie's Plan' is not very funny and Andrew in particular hated watching this detached treatment of romantic entanglements. Phil wanted to like this film and found some of the performances to be quite good, but ultimately felt the story was too slight to be satisfying.
