Universal makes a naked grab for box office, and are not successful. Bad movie, plus box office failure equals 'turkey.' The studio is reviving their classic monsters from the 1930s in the new 'Dark Universe' franchise. The unifying element is Dr. Jekyll, who will appear in each film, from this film and on to THE INVISIBLE MAN and so forth. Tom Cruise, looking puffier than ever, is the unlikable rapscallion Nick Morton, treasure hunter and all-around douche. He attempts to get rich by plundering ancient artifacts in Iraq. Courtney B. Vance, the only black character, is the first one to die after several minutes of screen time. These cinematic blunders and more point to a bone-headed movie out of step with the times.
