Andrew and Phil are unable to name a great tennis movie. The sport doesn't lend itself well to being filmed, although Hitchcock did an admirable job as far back as 1951. But unexciting tennis is the least problem with BATTLE OF THE SEXES. The acting talent on display here is stellar, but they are saddled with a mediocre script and pedestrian direction. There is at least one great performance in the form of Andrea Riseborough, and Emma Stone does do well in some of her intimate scenes. Sadly, Steve Carell is mostly wasted and makes one want to watch FOXCATCHER again. Just to see him soar.
