Peter Devereaux is a retired CIA agent living in Switzerland, where he owns a coffee shop by Lake Geneva. Years after a botched operation involving an inexperienced partner named David Mason, Devereaux wants nothing more than to live his anonymous life in Lausanne, when he is pulled out of retirement for one last job. Devereaux's former boss wants to hire him to extract an agent embedded in the government of Russia, where a war criminal is poised to become the next president. While in the middle of this unexpected assignment, Devereaux becomes entangled with Alice, a woman fleeing an assassin. And in an ironic twist, David Mason returns, this time as Devereaux's adversary. Pierce Brosnan plays the titular character, the nickname for Devereaux, who passes through and leaves nothing behind. Brosnan plays his most brutal personality ever and is the greatest asset of this political thriller.
