Wait for it...wait for it. There it is. Yes, it's "The Drop", a new crime drama from the fertile mind-grounds of Dennis Lehane, this time turning an eye toward Brooklyn mobsters. Bob (Tom Hardy) is a bartender who is a little slow on the uptake but has a good heart. He works at "Cousin Marv's" bar for the very same Cousin Marv (the late James Gandolfini). Their bar is occasionally a drop site for local mob-owned businesses to temporarily stash their collection money. Bob isn't interested in a life of crime. In fact, he lives a solitary life until he rescues a dog from a garbage can in the neighborhood. Said pooch turns out to be on the domain of Nadia (Noomi Rapace) and she strikes up an uneasy relationship with Bob. But this ain't a love story. At least, not entirely. Cousin Marv's bar gets robbed and that night's drop is stolen. This opens a big can of worms for all parties concerned. "The Drop" is a solid, revisionist crime drama that gets recommendations from Phil and Andrew. It is also the last film in which we will ever see James Gandolfini, and that is a sad fact.
