David Oyelowo gives a towering performance as Martin Luther King Jr. in this dramatization of the historic civil rights demonstration that brought thousands of activists from around the country to march in Selma, Alabama to secure equal voting rights for black Americans. Director Ava DuVernay juggles a large cast of characters to create a tapestry of politicians, protesters and police all to convey the climate of 1965. Despite the broad array of players in this drama, Andrew found the film to be flat and unremarkable, while Phil was more excited by the subject matter, which was handled with excitement and soulfulness.
