Vijay Vasudevan is the Associate Data Scientist at Autism Speaks. He joins us today as a result of reconnecting with Tony through work related to promoting the COVID-19 vaccine in populations with people with disabilities. His work in the disability community is extensive and together, they dive into conversation about such topics as how to work towards efforts that can be made to destigmatize disability. They also talk about the medical model of disability, regarding how people in the clinical settings view disability, and how the preparation and training of medical students and other healthcare professionals impact people with disabilities’ access healthcare.
Tony also talks to Vijay about Autism Speaks as an organization and community, and the needs they have within this community. Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. They do this through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.
