Description

Mira Gaitanis is an artist and an advocate who happens to have low vision. Currently, she is Junior pursuing a major in Media and Communication Studies at Florida State University. She likes to stay involved on campus with The Center for Leadership and Social Change and their programs, which includes Service Scholars.

On this episode, we have the privilege of hearing Mira share her story, her experience with having low vision disability, why she’s inspired to be a lifelong learner, and how she came to be an adaptive and skilled self-advocate. She talks to us about her journey through education and how her support systems helped her to grow during her transition into college. Mira speaks on how representation in media for people with disabilities matters and expresses how the lack of representation has fueled her inspiration as an artist. One of many important takeaways from Tony’s conversation with Mira is learning to lean into our vulnerabilities. On this episode, Mira talks about isolation, self esteem, shame, independent living, confidence, and how all those integrate with each other and how she navigates that.

When she’s not busy with school and community service, Mira loves to create music with her band, Flat Moon Theory, whom she’s known since second grade! They have released two albums and and EP.
