Jose and I discuss what life was really like in one of the world’s most notorious gangs - The Crips which he would join when he was only 16 years old.
Jose opens up and explains how the system is set up as a breeding ground for gangs to thrive on venerable kinds and use the situation to prey on their vulnerabilities creating such loyal members.
Find out what life was like in prison and discover the harsh reality Jose faced when he was released as he battled with depression and suicidal thoughts.
Jose Lugo
Jose Lugo joined a L.A. street gang when he was sixteen and was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison at the age of eighteen.
When he paroled from prison, he vowed to himself that he would never go back and dreamt of one day telling the stories of his peers. At the age of thirty-one Jose returned to jail for a D.U.I. After his three day incarceration he had lost all hope. He took inventory of his life and saw himself only as a criminal with no value.
On the brink of taking his own life, he was able to remember a simple truth that he had believed as a child - that he had inherent value, therefore his story had value. It was in that moment he was able to find the value in his story once again.
