Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. The CLPS missions have begun for NASA…using private companies like Intuitive Machines and SpaceX …designed to deliver payloads to the lunar surface. NASA CLPS project manager Chris Culbert says some will fail, some will succeed…but all will be valuable as NASA prepares to send astronauts back to the moon by the end of the decade. Some may wonder why it is not so easy…since we were there with much less technology more than fifty years ago. Culbert says one difference has to do with the nearly unlimited resources the Apollo missions had back then..

“So part of it is just lowering the cost of going to the moon. You just don’t spend as many resources so there are some challenges associated with the resources. But we must never forget, spaceflight in general is still very difficult. The smallest mistakes can doom a mission.”
