Last week saw the end of the Champions League group stage. With only 16 teams left, and the knockout round draw due on Monday, it’s time to evaluate the teams left in the competition as well as evaluate the competition’s place on the football calendar. Talks of a breakaway Super League persist, as well as general talk of reforming the Champions League. But one thing is certain, the group stage, in its current guise, is not fit for purpose. So, what’s next for the Champions League, and who will lift the crown come the end of the season?

There is a big weekend of Premier League action ahead. With Liverpool away in the Club World Cup, second plays third in a battle to gain ground on the league leaders.
