Between technology mess ups, controversial refereeing decisions, calamitous defending and last minute winners… the Premier League is back!
Part 1
Well, the moment has finally come and gone. The longest break between matchweeks of a season in English football history has flown by. In between now and our last show, we’ve caught a brief glimpse of just about every Premier League side… except Burnley.
Hello and welcome to the Total Football podcast. I am your host Declan Harte, and with me is Andrew Conway.
Andrew, did anything in particular stand out from the weekend’s action?
Part 2
After 30 years of waiting, Liverpool fans… are still waiting. The 0-0 Merseyside Derby did reach an audience of 5.5 million though, setting a new Premier League viewing record.
The other big game of the week was at the new White Hart Lane, as Tottenham drew 1-1 with Manchester United. It was a pretty typical Jose Mourinho game.
Arsenal’s season continues where it left off really. What more can be said that hasn’t been already. As if David Luiz’s performance on Wednesday night, when Arsenal lost 3-0 at the Etihad, wasn’t bad enough, the team then lost 2-1 to a 95th minute winner away at Brighton
Part 3
UEFA announced last week their plans for the resumption of European competition for the end of this season. The Champions League will recommence August 7 with the final round of 16 games and finish on the 23rd. The final three rounds will all take place in Lisbon, and will be one-legged affairs. The Europa League will follow a similar format, but take place in Germany. What do we make of these changes, are they the best we could reasonably hope for?
Part 4
Premier League action keeps on coming thick and fast now. Another round of fixtures takes place this midweek, as well as the return of the FA Cup this weekend. The big games include Man United vs. Sheffield United, and Chelsea vs. Man City.
