Ray Horton was once drafted by the original USFL, but never played a down for the L.A. Express, now 20 years later, he is hired by the USFL to run the Pittsburgh Maulers. Thanks to the color change for the Maulers, Horton will once again don the black and gold in 2023. Beginning his playing career with the Bengals, a place he would also later coach, he helped lead them to a Super Bowl in 1988 when they would lose to the 49ers. Moving on to Dallas he would win a Super Bowl for the first time in 1992 his final season.

Giving way to Darren Woodson in the Dallas secondary, Horton hung up the cleats, slipped on some sneakers, and stepped into coaching almost immediately. First with the Washington Redskins, but later returning to his first NFL home with Cincy. After his stint with the Bengals as a coach, he landed in Pittsburgh with the Steelers, where his coaching career really took off. In a matter of five seasons, Horton had added two more Super Bowl rings to his collection. Very quickly after he would spend time as a defensive coordinator for several teams, including two one-year stints in Cleveland. After nearly a decade living in Ohio earlier in his career, and representing the Steelers for 7 seasons, Horton was hired to oversee the Pittsburgh Maulers, playing in Ohio, with his son Jarren by his side as his assistant head coach/defensive coordinator.
