The middle of the twentieth century saw a dramatic realignment of Christian cultural identity, away from the liberal enlightenment values the fundamentalists had reacted against in the 20s and 30s toward a pro-capitalist, pro-nationalist, anti-communist national identity. The avatar for this transition was Billy Graham, whose name has become synonymous with evangelism, but whose evangelistic technique was steeped in right-wing political rhetoric. In this episode we discuss some of the undercurrents and cultural influencers behind the scenes of the Billy Graham phenomenon. Note: After recording this episode, fuller recordings of the Nixon tapes (the redacted versions published in 2002, the fuller recordings being quietly deposited into the Nixon library in 2018) were brought to our attention. In these recordings, Graham expresses virulently and explicitly anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.
