#7 Not self-promoting, does not build relationships for self-gain or personal status. Not trying to work their way to the head of the table—able to freely love people without expecting anything in return. (Luke 14:12)
As Christians, we are called to love and serve others, not to seek our own glory or gain. This can be challenging, especially in a world that often values self-promotion and the pursuit of personal status. However, a mature Christian is able to set aside these worldly desires and instead focus on loving others without expecting anything in return.
One of the keyways that a mature Christian avoids self-promotion is by putting the needs of others before their own. Instead of seeking to be at the head of the table, they are content to serve in whatever capacity is needed. This is not to say that they are pushovers or doormats, but rather that they have learned to put their own desires and ambitions aside in order to serve others.
Another way that a mature Christian avoids self-promotion is by building relationships based on genuine love and concern, rather than for the purpose of personal gain. They do not use others for their own benefit, but instead seek to truly know and care for others. In this way, their relationships are built on a foundation of mutual respect and trust, rather than manipulation or deceit.
Furthermore, a mature Christian does not need validation, the focus is on others not themselves. They do not need recognition for the good deeds they do, they do it for the love of God and love for their fellow man. They understand that their true reward is in heaven and not on earth.
Ultimately, a mature Christian is one who has learned to set aside their own desires and instead focus on loving and serving others. They do not seek to promote themselves or gain personal status, but instead strive to love and care for others in the same way that Jesus loved and served us. As Luke 14:12 reminds us, "When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
As we strive to be more like Jesus, let us remember to put others first, to build relationships based on genuine love, and to focus on serving others rather than seeking our own glory. May we learn to freely love people without expecting anything in return, just as our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
