Q. What special events are happening at Krause right now?
A. We are looking forward to our big family event, the Krause Carnival, on October 24. We will have games, silent auction items, and a Halloween costume contest. We invite anyone to come and join the fun from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Krause. We are also looking forward to the BISD Block Party coming up on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cub Stadium. We are continuing to celebrate positive behavior with our Bingo Bucks and Mega Bucks for students as they exhibit awesome behavior in the hallway, cafeteria, gym, on the playground, and during arrival or dismissal.
Q. What CORE Value have you been talking about this month?
A. For the month of October, we have talked about Courage. Each day our students hear that having courage means being brave enough to do what is right even when you are afraid. We have heard some amazing quotes like “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear,” by Mark Twain. Or another great message by Winston Churchill stating “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”
Q. How has your campus celebrated Red Ribbon Week?
A. Red Ribbon Week is being celebrated across our campus by all of our students participating in daily dress-up days. On Monday, our campus wore red from head to toe. On Tuesday, our staff and students wore crazy socks as we “socked it” to drugs. On Wednesday, we’re wearing camouflage as we join the fight against drugs. Thursday we will “put a cap on drugs” as we all wear our favorite cap or hat, and on Friday, it’s green out day as we talk about Cubs not doing drugs.
Q. Tell us about the Omega International Exchange Program that you have going on at Krause.
A. This program began last year as a sort of “pen pal” activity with a group of students and teachers from China. We met some teachers and directors who actually came to our campus, but we also met students from China online. We have been working with these same students with various projects, and we are very excited to begin an online learning program in which we spend an hour learning with students in China. This means we have to meet at 7:00 p.m. our time so that the students in China are meeting at 9:00 a.m. their time. We are experiencing so much learning and fun! We can’t wait for our next virtual learning session.
Q. What is the most important thing parents can do for their children in their learning process?
A. The biggest way parents can help is by talking to their children about their day. Today our world is so fast-paced and we get so caught up in technology, getting to the next place, or accomplishing the next task that we often forget to just talk. Talking can lead to some of the best conversations about what is happening in school, what is happening in life or just about what your child had for lunch that day. Take time to put the cell phone away and spend 5 minutes talking about your child’s day.
