In 1 Samuel 23 & 24, Saul is still laser focused on finding and killing David and is not doing his job as king. The town of Keilah is being attacked so David steps in and defends them even while running for his life. He shows compassion to people around him no matter the circumstances he's facing. God's favor is working through David's life. He is humble and seeks the direction and guidance of God before making any decisions. David is tempted to kill Saul when he is hiding in a cave and Saul comes into that very cave to relieve himself. He cuts a piece of Saul's robe and is immediately convicted. Rather than murdering Saul, he seeks reconciliation and shows him respect, honor, and mercy. Saul is temporarily moved emotionally in this moment, but is not brought to true repentance. David is anointed as king but his time for kingship has not yet come. He could have killed Saul but instead showed him respect for his current position and leadership. Our lives as Christ followers should look different. Our character and integrity should reflect Christ's and we should remain humble rather than grumble.
