In 1 Samuel 31, the attack from the Philistines breaks out on Israel and Saul and three of his sons are killed. Saul's story sets us up for the reign of David as the lives of David and Saul have been compared so far. It also shows us humanity. Saul chooses to reign as king in his own ways instead of with a repentant heart under submission to God and God's authority. Saul sees the results if evil to the full extent as he faces death. We are all imperfect and face sin in our lives and we all desperately need Jesus. We need to always take God seriously. He is God. He is self-sufficient and truly wants us in His story, but He does not need us. He pursues us out of His vast love for us. We need to always be mindful of who we are listening to and who we are fearing. It's not about you and me, it's about our role in God's story and under His direction and our part in His great story. It's about finding our lane in submission to God and filling it while bringing all glory and honor to God and God alone.
