In 2 Samuel 1, David hears the news that both Saul and Jonathan had died in the battle between the Philistines and Israelites. David is deeply moved to mourning - not just for the loss of his best friend but for the national tragedy of losing their king. He composes a personal, poetic, and emotionally charged funeral song. His integrity, character, and fierce loyalty shine through. He is humble under God and keeps his focus on God through it all. God appointed Saul as the 1st king of Israel and David shows a deep respect in that regardless of the fact that Saul spent a great deal of time and energy trying to kill David. Still, David never slanders Saul and in fact calls him the Lord's anointed one repeatedly throughout the Scriptures. He shows the true love of Jesus - even for his enemies. As Christ followers, we should resemble Christ in all we do. We should look different, act different, and speak different. Our character and integrity should directly reflect that of Christ's in all of the moments of our days.
