In Ezekiel 1, Ezekiel is a priest and prophet who has been in Babylonian exile with his fellow Israelites about 5 years when he receives the vision and call of God on his life to be God's messenger for His people. God gives him a vision of His glory and it shows up in a flashing of light. He sees 4 magnificent living beings who quickly carry out all that God commands. They are covered with eyes and have wheels of judgment. They sound like waves crashing against the shore or the shouting of a mighty army when they fly. He sees Jesus on a throne who was like gleaming amber, flickering like fire, from the waist up. From His waist down, He looked like a burning flame, shining with splendor. All around Him was a glowing halo, like a rainbow shining in the clouds on a rainy day. He responds to God's glory by falling face down on the ground. Ezekiel is being called by God and is seeing God's glory firsthand. He is called to release God's Word no matter how hard it is. We are called and commissioned to spread God's Word as well and submissively fall down to Him - giving Him all our worship and praise as we wait for His return. It is the only response to His amazing glory and the only thing that truly matters.
