In episode 17, we are discussing the BENEFITS of sugar (yes, you read that right). In science class we learned that sugar (aka glycogen) provides energy to the cells in our body, however, we most often hear that excessive intake of processed sugar can lead to weight gain, heart disease, and diabetes. In this podcast episode, we will highlight the benefits of the healthy side of sugar and the ways in which we can consume it without the looming health repercussions.
The rhetoric we hear is that it is most important to focus on the consumption of protein. What we aren't told, is that many Americans today are getting WAYYY too much protein in their daily diets. According to the USDA, the average adult in the United States consumes about 80-100 grams of protein per day. They also recommend that adult men and women consume 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. For example, a sedentary woman weighing 68 kilograms (150 pounds) would require around 55 grams of protein per day, whereas a sedentary man weighing 91 kilograms (200 pounds) would need around 74 grams of protein per day. All of this varies based on gender, age, physical activity level, and dietary choices. Even the average person is eating too much protein!
When we eat a lot of protein, we also end up eating more fat. Fat inhibits the body's ability to absorb and use the sugar in the bloodstream, which can lead
to all sorts of health problems. But what if it was the other way around? What if we ate highdf in carbohydrates (when turn into sugar/glycogen) and low in fat and protein? We dive deep into this on the episode today!
Everyone is talking about protein and no one is mentioning healthy carbs, which the country is starving for. Of course, the most optimal way is to consume "sugar" is through natural sweeteners like maple syrup, coconut sugar, and honey. The best way is by consuming fruits that will provide our body with the required energy and nutrients that it needs to function properly.
