Interesting Facts:

Writer Satyadev Janga worked on the story for 3 years and he knew Rahul Sankrityan from a long time.

The inception of Shyam Singha Roy happened in 2019 when the filmmaker met writer Satyadev Janga. The latter pitched a one-liner with the backdrop of Calcutta.

The highlight of the movie is that Kalighat Temple Set in Hyderabad. It was The set costed them Rs 6.5 crores and the shoot of the film is currently happening in the set. The film is a periodic drama set in the backdrop of West Bengal. A 100-year-old Kali temple set was constructed using bricks and clay to bring the authentic feel of an old Bengali temple. Over 1200 workers took two months to construct the special set that is spread across 10 acres in the outskirts of Hyderabad. Even the workers for the set are flown down from West Bengal as the makers did not want to miss the unique style of the temples in their state. But the set was damaged by heavy rains and The makers spent close to Rs 2 crores and 10 days on the set work again.

Movie got average talk I think and was a hut but the weirdest movie. Budget was 4-60 crores but they undersold it for just like 20 or 25 crores and it made 27 crores share and was a hit at the box office. Its considered a success.

Writing/Direction:

The big problem with this movie is actually the present portion. Any story of reincarnation needs conflict but here there is none. Vasu’s entire character has no point because his whole point is that he is Shyam Singha Roy reincarnated. Theres nothing else. The main villain Mahanth is already dead and if he wanted to take revenge, then Shyam’s brothers are also dead cobvienelty in a a car crash. So the entire present portion is useless.

I still standby my comment that if the director had made the entire movie in 1970’s Kolkata with the same themes of caste, communism, and devadasi’s this movie would have been an all time classic. Because there’s so much to explore.

The directors efforts in writing are present in set up and payoffs which some of them work brilliantly.

  1. Shyam first scene in the movie is fighting for a Lower caste person (intouchables) then he happens to marry someone of a Lower caste that leads to his death. So his first and last scenes are mirrors of each other
  2. His ideologies were the reason for his downfall. His brothers have differences since they are a conservative family so he decides to leave
  3. Used Navaratri as a way to establish the love track, they meet almost every night. And Shyam is an atheist.
  4. Rosie tells him that she Ila okrka Amma vasya roju, nee vodilo padukunni, ninne choosthu, moham meeda chirunavvu tho chanipovali ani vundi, ache naa aakhari korika and in cliamx thats what happens when Vasu comes back
  5. His right pinky finger is interlocked with her when they are married and when he dies the same finger shakes. And when she dies in Vasu’s arms, his pinky finger is with her
  6. The story that Vasu directs happens to a butterfly that a little girl drew on a boat. This comes back in the climax.
  7. 2 Bells burn in opening scene and then Nani brings them to Rosie in climax and leaves them on a table before he meets her.

Production Design by Avinash Kolla. MASTERPIECE. The Bengali architecture is perfect and the whole atmosphere created for the period setup, printing press, houses, village, etc is so good and authentic and realistic. Its the highlight technicality of the movie if you ask me.
