I frequently get asked if great leaders are born or made.
Studies seem to indicate about a third are born with favorable characteristics, and two-thirds are forged by life experiences.
If you’re told you were a born leader, you’ll probably act like one. There’s also a strong likelihood you’ll fall into certain traps of entitlement and privilege, which can blind you.
If nature and circumstance cause you to act like a leader because no one else has stepped up, or you’re deeply committed and focused on a vision for a better future, would you be successful if you didn’t have the latent capabilities?
I don’t particularly care, and to me, it doesn’t matter.
Born, raised, forged, or accidental, great leaders who do not deliberately practice and further their development will ultimately decay, and then lousy leaders win.
That is unacceptable.
