Stephen Covey has a great tool for this. It's his 4 quadrants.
I. Urgent & Important
II. Important
III. Urgent (Not important)
IV. Neither urgent nor important.
The trick is to focus on Quadrant 2, and the way to do it is by looking at your goals on weekly increments.
