In this episode of the Empowered Women's Health Podcast, we are honored to welcome a passionate advocate for melanoma awareness and sun safety, Sally Everett. Sally shares a deeply personal journey that led her to become a board member for the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation.
In September 2021, Sally's beloved father, Lionel, was diagnosed with a shocking and massive 22cm internal melanoma. Despite being one of the most sun-safe individuals Sally knew, her family had no idea that melanomas could be internal and faced immense challenges navigating information and support resources during their ordeal.
Devastatingly, Lionel passed away in November 2021. In the aftermath of this loss, Sally and her family made a courageous decision to share their story, spreading awareness about melanoma, and advocating for better education and support resources. Their mission became clear: to emphasize the significance of sun protection, regular skin checks, and early detection.
In November 2022, Sally's dedication to the cause caught the attention of The Australian Skin Cancer Foundation, who extended an invitation for her to join their board of directors. Recognizing the profound impact she could make in this role, Sally graciously accepted, embracing the opportunity to become a regional advocate for melanoma awareness and sun safety.
In this episode, Sally sheds light on the importance of understanding melanoma risks, early detection, and the significance of consistent sun protection practices. She shares her advocacy journey and how she, as a non-medical professional, is determined to create education and awareness to prevent other families from enduring the pain of losing loved ones to this devastating disease.
