On January 4th, 1963, a ceremony was held marking the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. The Proclamation changed the legal status of more than 3.5 million enslaved African-Americans in the Confederate states, giving them freedom if they could escape rebel control.
