It’s Skeptik’s turn to steer the ship this week! Join us as we discuss the 1999 cult classic Audition, directed by Takashi Miike! Firmly in the “good for her” category of horror, this film has had a profound influence on many accomplished directors in (and adjacent to) the genre. What begins as a seemingly innocuous attempt at finding love (read as “committing fraud”), takes a sinister turn as events unfold and the viewer is led down the dark, twisted rabbit hole that is the mind of Asami Yamazaki. Exploring themes of abuse of power and loneliness/isolation, the film presents itself as a romantic drama of sorts. Which makes it’s bloody climax all the more shocking.
TW: violence, gore, use of needles, torture, abuse toward children.
