In anticipation of checking out the much anticipated sequel next week, we’re entering the colosseum to take on Gladiator, one of the most beloved and iconic movies of all time. Ridley Scott’s epic follows Maximus (Russell Crowe), a betrayed Roman general-turned-gladiator, on a quest for vengeance against the corrupt Emperor Commodus ("Wacky" Joaquin Phoenix). The film certainly boasts a grand scale and an amazing score from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard. But let’s be honest... we think it’s kind of overrated. Its action sequences often feel surprisingly mediocre (see Ridley's later films), and the storytelling relies heavily on simplistic motivations and predictable beats. We delve into why this Oscar-winning blockbuster captured the hearts of so many, but why it doesn’t live up to its legendary status for us. Apologies in advance.
