Description

Experiencing Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977) for the first time was fantastic, as Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic delivers a wonderful blend of atmosphere, mystery, and awe. Richard Dreyfuss stars as Roy Neary, an ordinary man drawn into an extraordinary encounter with extraterrestrial life. Also featuring in the cast is French auteur François Truffaut. And shout out of course to One Take Cary (the child actor who plays Barry) who has a face made for the big screen. We analyse how Spielberg’s focus on family dynamics feels deeply personal, almost a precursor to the autobiographical themes we later saw in The Fabelmans. The film’s use of lighting, composition, and UFO design creates an unforgettable visual experience, while its optimistic take on alien contact subverts Cold War-era fears in favour of curiosity and optimism. We agree Spielberg shows the sci-fi genre immense reverence in this picture.Record your own podcasts with Zencastr at https://zencastr.com/?via=cinemaeffect to get 30% off today.Question Of The Week: What is your favourite car?Post your answer in the comments below to be featured on next week's episode.Next Week's Film: American Graffiti (Foxtel, Binge)Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/Xd86SSFt7cFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/cinema_effect?igshid=lsz7ohc33id6Subscribe on YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC2T2RXUUT7jXwZVl1k9boqQ?sub_confirmation=1Leave us a review: https://ratethispodcast.com/cinemaeffectFollow the crew on LetterboxdLiam: https://letterboxd.com/idealisticguy/Jayden: https://letterboxd.com/jaydentraj/Zac: https://letterboxd.com/zacfinn17/Timestamps ;)0:00 - Close Encounters Of The Third Kind Review1:05:15 - What We've Been Watching1:17:46 - Question Of The Week
