To kick off Pride month, we watch Stephen Frears' My Beautiful Laundrette (1985). The film tells the story of Omar (Gordon Warnecke), a young Pakistani man living in London, who dreams of transforming his uncle's run-down laundrette into a successful business. Along the way, he reconnects with Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis), an old friend and former lover, who is now involved in right-wing politics. Their relationship blossoms, transcending societal barriers and challenging conventional norms. The film tackles various themes such as race, sexuality, and economic disparities, all set against the backdrop of Thatcher-era Britain. It was a groundbreaking exploration of complex social issues and received widespread critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for screenwriter Hanif Kureishi for Best Original Screenplay. This film was Matt's pick.
