The 91st Academy Awards went much better than many - certainly better than I - expected. While there were no disasters of the sort the Oscars endured in 1989, the last time they went host-less, there were a few sad commentaries on the state of film, culture and politics, which is sadly not surprising in the least.
However there was a lot to love, and I celebrate that - for instance, Black Panther won 6 out of the 7 awards that it was nominated for, shattering the notion that comics-based movies aren't Oscar-worthy. It's about time, and this movie more than any other comics inspired film - with the possible exception of the Dark Knight - represents everything great about the genre.
Meanwhile, Spike Lee finally won an Oscar: Best Adapted Screenplay, for BlacKkKlansman, my favorite movie of 2018. He was graceful and joyful in his acceptance speech, and spoke of the potential and need for us all to be better versions of ourselves in these trying times. And wouldn't you know it, the president took this as a personal affront, and rage-tweeted about it. Like I said, that's unavoidable, and has nothing at all to do with the Oscars. It's all about that "executive time" spent watching television and raging at perceived slights.
We must not let him take away from the generally, surprisingly wonderful 91st Annual Academy Awards - although Best Picture was a pretty huge, if predictable, letdown.
