The reviews are pouring in for Aquaman, in theaters December 21, and unlike the early hot-takes I reported on last week, the praise is not universal. It's largely liked - certainly more than most recent DC Extended Universe offerings - but both The Guardian and IndieWire have similar complaints about the movie, likening it to a watered-down Thor retread. I'm still excited to see it, it's just that the negative reviews were bound to surface once the review embargo was lifted.

I still see it as a fresh start for DC, the first step in a bigger re-imagining of the shared cinematic universe which Amy Adams all but confirmed on Friday (December 7), telling Variety that “I think I’m out of the DC Universe now. I think they’re revamping that. I don’t know the details.” This, on the same day that the Hollywood Reporter announced that Warner Bros. is working on a Plastic Man movie, so expect a much more light-hearted approach from the Distinguished Competition moving forward.
