Description

At the age of 25, I started working in public library as I was pursuing my Masters Degree. I was excited to share my ideas and wanted to try out what I was learning in Library School. But alas, I was told my ideas weren't the way they did things at that library. I worked there for about a year before moving on to a new public library. My ideas and enthusiasm were embraced and I tripled circulation as well as increased traffic in our programs. A few years later I switched to school libraries and was working in a high school. I think I was about 32. One of my mentors advised me to "fly under the radar" because I was getting a lot of attention and she didn't want me to get hurt.

Here's the thing, I can't do that. Eagles soar on thermal heat above everything as high as 10,000 feet above sea level without suffering from the lower levels of oxygen. They seek out heat to fly!

One day another colleague said, "they" had been watching me and wanted to know if I would like to take students to Japan for a month. (Mind you, this trip was fully paid for with a stipend. It was a huge honor and a big responsibility.) If I had been flying under the radar, I would not have been noticed and afforded the opportunity to travel to Japan that year, Mexico the next year, and Germany the last year I worked at the high school. I even went to Brazil because I let the State Department know I wanted to go and why I would be the best candidate for the experience.

People mean well and wanted me to be safe. However, eagles don't congregate with chickens. As a matter of fact, chickens can only fly short distances for food, to perch, or to hide. Their wings aren't strong enough to fly far, were a female eagle's wingspan can be up to 7.2 feet long

Therefore, use the heat of a situation to soar, to climb high above those who are safely on the ground, and do so unapologetically.
