If our actions are killing albatross chicks in the Pacific and we value those lives, can our capitalism be altered based on this value? Chicks are dying from plastic that their mothers are feeding them. The moms find this plastic waste floating on the ocean. About one third of the chicks will die from eating plastics that we discard. If the majority of Americans decide they value the chicks, is there someway to alter our capitalism so that we can make changes to save the albatross even if it goes against the financial interests of America? In short, how do we make changes to capitalism where what we value determines our actions even if it doesn't increase profits?
How does America in general optimize our system based on more than financial drivers. Lobbyists represent the interest of the plastic manufacturer, who represents the albatross and those you care about the albatross? Why does our system preferentially react to financial drivers? How can we improve it to respond more to our values?
