Parsha Shiur Va’eschannon 5785
Moshe Rabbeinu begged and pleaded with Hashem to go into Eretz Yisroel. He was even prepared to accept that Yehoshua would be the leader and he would go into Eretz Yisroel as a ‘regular’ Jew. Hashem repeatedly refused to grant him entry. He wasn’t even allowed to be buried in Israel. He was given only the opportunity to see it
The Shiur quotes 3 intriguing comments of Rashi:
1. Rashi writes that that Hashem told Moshe he was granting his request by allowing him to see it.
2. Rashi also writes that Yehoshua was afraid that he would be punished just as Moshe was and not be permitted to take the Jews to Israel. Moshe reassured Yehoshua in Hashem’s name that he was guaranteed to lead the Jews into the land and conquer it.
3. Yehoshua eas irdered to lead the Jews out to wat personally. If he chose to remain behind, and send thr Jews out to war, they would be defeated.
The Midrash explains, that Hashem did allow Moshe the option to enter the land, but there was a caveat. Had Moshe chosen to enter the land of Israel, the Jewish people would have been annihilated by GD.
