We spoke with Dr Bilyana Lilly, (@BilyanaLilly/Twitter) a cybersecurity expert and the author of “Russian Information Warfare: Assault on Democracies in the Cyber Wild West”. We discussed the importance of cyber and information warfare approaches to Russia (in times of war as well as peace) and dissected the threat it poses to NATO members and the world at large in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and attempts to sway policies in allied nations in Russia’s favour. To better illustrate it, we examined the Russian assault on the electoral system in Bulgaria and the Russian attempt to stage a …. coup(!) in Montenegro. Concluding with policy prescriptions, Bilyana explained her suggestions for what actions Western governments and polities should take to minimise the Russian threat.
