Four more teams and one giant league table—the new Champions League format is far more concerning than confusing. Pep Guardiola expressed his discontent with excessive matches earlier this year, saying, “It’s getting worse”. In today’s world, where every match is crucial for a club’s sporting and financial success, keeping players fit throughout the season is becoming increasingly important. Defending the new format, UEFA argued that it will make the Champions League more open, competitive, and exciting. The fans will be able to enjoy 189 matches instead of 125, and the Champions League will make an extra €1 billion per season. But at what expense? Only time will tell.
