From writing a thesis on dribbling to bamboozling Premier League defenders, here is the story of Kaoru Mitoma. The Brighton forward burst onto the scene by scoring goals against Everton, Liverpool, and Arsenal this season. Interestingly, the Japanese turned down a professional contract when he was 19. Instead of joining the J1 League side, Kawasaki Frontale, Mitoma enrolled at the University of Tsukuba to pursue a degree in physical education. The topic of his thesis was "The Art of Dribbing." He used to put cameras on the heads of his university teammates to study what and where the players saw during 1-on-1 take-ons. After completing his course, Mitoma eventually joined Frontale before the Seagulls signed him for €3 million. In his debut season in England, Kaoru is averaging 2.29 successful dribbles per ninety minutes, which is third-best in the league. "Good dribblers look ahead and trap the ball without looking down at their feet," Professor Mitoma reveals.
