The stakes are too high for the players at any FIFA World Cup. It can either bring them unprecedented fame and money or cost them their jobs, freedom, or even lives. The Round of 16 encounter between South Korea and Italy at the 2002 World Cup was full of controversial decisions. Ahn Jung-Hwan, whose goal knocked the European giants out of the competition, got his contract terminated by the Italian club Perugia. In 2010, with a FIFA ranking of 105, North Korea qualified as the lowest-ranked team. Instead of appreciation for making it through the biggest football competition in 44 years, the players were made to work as labourers in coal mines after a disappointing performance. The most extreme case of all was seen in 1994. In Group Stage, an unfortunate own goal by Columbian captain Andrés Escobar not only handed the United States victory but also forced his team to an early exit. Some days later, a group of men taunted Escobar about his own goal before he was shot dead in his home country.
