FIFA has banned the governing body of football in India, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) citing undue third-party influence as the reason. According to FIFA, the matters related to everything that comes under the international football federation cannot be taken to ordinary courts and the disputes must be resolved through arbitration.
In May 2022, Praful Patel stepped down as the President of AIFF following an order from the Supreme Court of India. The newly appointed Committee of Administrators were pushing for 50% positions in the Executive Committee for former players against 25% places allowed by FIFA. After a lot of warnings, FIFA finally suspended AIFF for breaching its statutes, continued irregularities and the growing influence of third parties, like the Supreme Court. The sanction now puts India in danger of losing the FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup scheduled later this year.
