What do you do when the situation goes from bad to worse? In Acts 12:1-5, the early church is in a full-blown crisis. Their leader, James, has been executed by King Herod. Now, Peter is in prison, heavily guarded and awaiting the same fate. From every human perspective, the door has been slammed shut and hope is lost. Dietrich Bonhoeffer reminds us, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” The cross is not an interruption to our journey, but the beginning of it. With this understanding, we can pray with confidence, knowing that even when doors are closed in front of us, the God of the Unexpected is already opening others for us to walk through.
