I don't mind walking up a hill for four, maybe five hours if a couple of things are factored in

Who is joining me on this climb?

What is the destination?

How are we going to measure our success or progress?

Are we prepared and equipped for the excursion?

These are the factors I will consider before spending my time.

Think about it.

Imagine  we are going hillwalking together, and I tell you, "keep walking till I  tell you to stop". You might think you would be executed and buried,  especially if I made you carry a spade.

You weren't expecting that on a podcast.

When it comes to your professional life. How are you measuring your success?

1. Are you enjoying your job? If you are, this is great. You spend so  much of your brainpower and time at your job. It's hard to pour energy  into your job if you are not enjoying it.

2. Do you enjoy the  people you work with? The world moves fast these days, so ask yourself,  would you like to work with these people 2 or 5 years from now?

3. What is the end goal for you? Where do you want to end up? It's only possible to plan a journey by knowing your destination.

4. Measuring progress is different for everyone: financial remuneration,  roles, responsibilities, opportunities, and freedom. These are some of  the ways I measure my progress in my professional life.

If you can't measure your success, it will leave you without a compass to weather the storm of your professional life.
