John Thatcher is a true Butte legend. He earned all-conference honors in football, basketball and baseball at Western Montana College, which is now called Montana Western. He scored the first touchdown at Alumni Coliseum, and he played against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Of course, Thatcher is known more as a coach because that is what he was put on this planet to do. He coached Butte Central's boys to the 1978 Class A State title, and he led Butte High's boys to Class AA title games in 2004 and 2007. He also coached with Kelvin Sampson at Montana Tech.
J.T. was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
