Suchitra Sen is a unique figure in Indian cinema: she's the sine qua non of Bengali films (no one woman is as critical to an entire body of a language cinema as she), she is highly regarded in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, she resolutely sculpted her professional image, and she walked away from films when she decided she was done and never looked back. We discuss four of her big films in both languages: Saptapadi, Agni Pariksha, Devdas, and Aandhi.
