A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Constantine the Great was born on this date in 272 AD. His influence on Christianity is significant. His Edict of Milan in 313 declared that Christians should be tolerated within the Roman Empire. Sometime before that, Constantine had seen a vision of the first two letters of Christ's name in Greek, XP, which became a symbol for his imperial rule. In 325, Constantine called together a meeting of theologians in Nicaea to address a controversy over Christ's deity. That council prepared a creed, which affirmed that Jesus was indeed "God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father." We can thank God for using Constantine to expand and clarify the Christian faith.
