A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: My Byzantine icon cross has several interesting features. Instead of the INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), it has an inscription "The King of Glory." On the halo surrounding Christ's head are letters indicating "Son of God." Then at the foot of the cross are a skull and crossbones, reminding us of Golgotha, "the place of the skull"' but also recalling an early Christian tradition (going back to Origen around 200 and Jerome around 300) which believed Adam was buried there. As Paul reminds us, Jesus is the Second Adam who gives us the assurance of heaven for all who believe.
