Violet is the rarest color found in nature. Resources needed to create this colored dye in ancient times were exceedingly rare and expensive. For this reason, violet is associated with royalty and wealth, referring that those who had abundant monetary resources could afford to have garments and household items dyed in this gorgeous hue. Tyrian purple, named after where it was created, in Tyre, Lebanon, was created by crushing the shells of sea snails. This practice created a natural reddish-purple color. Other names for this dye include Phoenician red, Phoenician purple, royal purple, imperial purple, and imperial red. If you are curious, this dye is still created today. It is still highly valued, and only created by just a handful of individuals around the globe.
